Review: Getting The Girl

Author: Markus Zusak
Publishers: Push; Reprint edition (1 May 2004)
Summary: Cameron Wolfe is the quiet one in his family, not a soccer star like his brother Steve or a charming fighter with a new girl every week like his brother Rube. Cam would give anything to be near one of those girls, to love her and treat her right. He especially likes Rube's latest, Octavia, with her brilliant ideas and bright green eyes. But what woman like that would want a loser like him? Maybe Octavia would, Cam discovers. Maybe he'd even have something to say. And those maybes change everything: winning, loving, losing, the Wolfe brothers, and Cameron himself.
First Line: It was Rube's girl idea to make beer ice blocks, not mine.

All Cameron Wolfe wants is to get the girl. Not in just that way, Cameron is looking for the girl and he wants to find her so he can 'drown' himself into her. After I finished FRW, I was desperate to get my hands on the sequel. Getting the is an entertaining yet touching self-discovery and coming-of-age story.
Cam's pursuit of a girl and attempts to understand the world and where he fits in it really resonated with me as a reader. Cameron is awkward, but lovable and you can' help but empathise with him. Zusak creates a realistic world where nice guys finish last. There are sections in this novel that will pull at your heartstrings and you feel connected with Cam. I found myself rooting for him. When Cam is sad, so are you. When Cam is happy, you are ecstatic.
My favourite part is when Cam begins to write down poetic prose on scrap pieces of paper. It felt like he was bleeding his soul into this paper. We learn about Cameron through three main areas: his interactions with others , his thoughts and his own written words.

At one point in the novel, Cam says that life is made up of moments, that those moments are the pieces of us, then this story is a piece worth carrying with you.
I know I sound like a broken record. I raved about The Book Thief and I am the Messenger. Now I'm raving about Fighting Ruben Wolfe and Getting The Girl. But, Zusak writing, characters and plots are just amazing, beautiful and...
I LOVE HIM OKAY?!
